Albania reaffirms support for Kosovo after Zelenskyy’s Serbia remarks
Albania on Sunday reaffirmed its support for Kosovo’s independence after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv’s position on Kosovo had not changed during his visit to Serbia.
Albania’s Foreign Ministry said Kosovo’s independence was irreversible and based on its own historical, political and legal foundations. It cited a 2010 International Court of Justice opinion that Kosovo’s declaration of independence did not violate international law.
The ministry rejected comparisons between Kosovo and Russia’s war in Ukraine, calling the two situations fundamentally different.
It also urged Serbia and Kosovo to normalize relations and ultimately recognize each other, saying this would strengthen stability and support a shared European future.
Kosovo’s Foreign Minister Behgjet Pacolli called Zelenskyy’s remarks “deeply disappointing,” saying Kosovo had strongly supported Ukraine since Russia’s invasion.
Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but Belgrade continues to reject it. Ukraine does not recognize Kosovo as an independent state.
