UN Rapporteur: Gaza death toll could reach 680,000 — including 380,000 children under age 5
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the occupied Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, has made a shocking statement regarding the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, warning that the true death toll may be as high as 680,000, with as many as 380,000 of them being children under the age of five.
Speaking in response to ongoing reports from the war-torn enclave, Albanese said the official figures provided by various sources may drastically underrepresent the actual human cost of the conflict.
“The real death toll in Gaza could be 680,000 people,” she stated. “If this estimate is accurate, around 380,000 of them are likely children under five years old.”
“Children are paying the heaviest price”
Albanese emphasized that the collapse of Gaza’s health system, coupled with ongoing bombardments and the lack of access to basic necessities, makes it extremely difficult to determine the full scale of human loss — but also suggests that the numbers could be far higher than reported.
“The possibility that hundreds of thousands of infants and toddlers have died paints a horrifying picture,” she added. “Children are paying the heaviest price in this war.”
A global humanitarian tragedy
Calling on the international community to act, Albanese urged immediate efforts to secure a ceasefire and ensure the establishment of humanitarian corridors into Gaza.
“What is happening in Gaza is not only a regional conflict — it is a global humanitarian tragedy. The world must not remain indifferent to these numbers,” she warned.
Verification remains challenging
The UN has previously acknowledged the difficulties in verifying death tolls, citing the destruction of health infrastructure, the collapse of civil registry systems, and ongoing military operations that have rendered many areas inaccessible.
While the numbers presented by Albanese are not officially confirmed, they reflect growing fears within the international community that the human toll of the conflict may be far worse than documented.
