Tragedy strikes: 30 fatalities in devastating train derailment near Nawabsah

30 people died and 90 others were injured when a passenger train derailed near the city of Nawabsah, Pakistan.

Pakistan's Railway Minister Kwaza Saad Rafiq announced that 10 coaches of the Hazara Expressi passenger train derailed near Nawabsah between Karachi and Rawalpindi.

Stating that the accident may have occurred as a result of "technical failure" or "sabotage", Rafiq said that so far 30 bodies and 90 injured have been taken to nearby hospitals in Nawabsah and Sangar districts.

The army and paramilitary forces were called to the spot to assist in search and rescue efforts.

While no information was given on the number of people on board the train at the time of the accident, local press reported that many people still remain trapped in the wagons and the death toll could rise.

In June 2021, 63 passengers were killed when two trains collided in Pakistan.
