Veteran educator Mehmet Emin Latif laid to rest in Bursa

Mehmet Emin Latif, a retired teacher who dedicated decades to education in Western Thrace, has been laid to rest following a funeral ceremony held in Bursa. His passing has left family, former students, and the wider community in mourning. The news of his death was announced by his son, Ali Eminlatif.

Funeral prayers were held on Monday, April 20, after the noon prayer at Güllük Mosque. Latif was subsequently buried at the Erdoğan Köy Kent Cemetery.

The ceremony drew significant attendance from political figures, local officials, civil society representatives, and members of the Western Thrace Turkish community. Among those present were former Deputy Prime Minister of Türkiye Hakan Çavuşoğlu, Oktay Yılmaz, and Hasan Karaömer, along with numerous other dignitaries and community members.

A Lifetime Dedicated to Education
Born in 1941 in Domruköy, near Gümülcine, Latif began his educational journey in his hometown before graduating from the İvriz Teacher Training School in the 1960–1961 academic year.

He went on to serve as a teacher in Çelebi Village from 1964 until his retirement in 2002, shaping generations of students and contributing significantly to the region’s educational development. Known for his discipline and commitment, Latif earned widespread respect as an educator.

Community Leadership and Legacy
Beyond the classroom, Latif was actively involved in community initiatives. He served as General Secretary of the Western Thrace Turkish Teachers' Union between 1980 and 1990, contributing to efforts supporting the rights and identity of the Western Thrace Turkish minority.

He also continued his academic pursuits, completing studies at Anadolu University Open Education Faculty between 1990 and 1992.

Remembered for his dedication to education, social responsibility, and strong moral character, Mehmet Emin Latif leaves behind a lasting legacy in both his profession and community.
