The Mufti of Xanthi Ahmet Mete spoke to the Aksam newspaper
“THERE IS NO RESPECT”
"There is no guarantee of any Ottoman foundation property in Greece. All of them were left at the mercy of the Greeks without protection. Foundation places and mosques were plundered throughout Greece and in the places where even the exchange of populations took place. There is no trace of the cemeteries.
Unfortunately, some mayors, villagers, and Greeks do not respect the cemetery, the dead, or the temple in the villages in Western Thrace where there are no Turks left. This will not be the first nor the last.”
THEY LOAD THE CEMETERY
"They demolished one of the oldest cemeteries in Xanthi with construction equipment. Since there were no Muslim Turks left in Horozlu, it turned into a wooded area. We asked for permission to clean it, and they gave permission.
Before we started cleaning, they said, 'You can't clean this place easily, this place is full of bushes, dirt, let's help you with construction equipment'. They helped, supposedly, with their work machines.
At that time, we assigned our imam friends working in that region for surveillance so that they would not damage the historical tombstones while the work was being carried out.
We have protected historical tombstones. But a year after these works, on March 16, 2022, they entered the cemetery with their construction equipment and plundered it by breaking the tombstones and sweeping everything."
POLICE RAIDED THE MOSQUE
"We are hearing that they will do such plunder for the historical mosque of Hemetli village, which is adjacent to Horozlu and where there are no Muslim Turks left there. We asked for permission to repair the Hemetli Mosque. First, they gave permission and we started working, but when we opened the roof, they withdrew our permission.
We surrounded the mosque with a group of masters, and the police raided and detained our friends. After that, whatever we wanted to do to protect that historical mosque, unfortunately, we faced obstacles from the Greek authorities."
THEY STARTED FROM THE MINARET
"Incorporating the plans into the city plan in a way that will take half of the mosque in the city council. Some stones on the balcony of the rare stone minaret have been broken before.
The minaret is currently bent. After taking half of the mosque, the minaret will fall by itself and that mosque will disappear from there. This is the goal and desire of racist circles. We are trying to fight where our power can affect, but as we said, the goal here is to destroy Ottoman and Muslim Turkish artifacts, to plunder minarets, mosques, cemeteries and foundation properties."
RECIPROCITY SHOULD COME TO AGENDA
Xanthi Elected Mufti Ahmet Mete said that Turkiye is following the issue closely and said, "Turkey should bring the principle of reciprocity to the agenda for the solution of both our graveyard and all our other problems."
