The first headscarved MP in the Assembly of North Macedonia

In the elections held in North Macedonia on 8 May, 41 women deputies were elected out of 120 deputies in the Parliament.
One of them was Imërlije Saliu, who was elected MP from the Albanian coalition VLEN (VALUE), who will be recorded, among others, as the first MP in parliamentary history to wear a headscarf.
In an interview with TRT Balkan, Saliu said that she will represent all women and will try to develop social policies centred on women and vulnerable categories.
Noting that the headscarf is not her first identity, Saliu said: "I am here to represent all women, veiled or not. However, I am also putting forward my true values, whether academic, moral and ethical. What I want to make my voice heard more today is the empowerment of women in society, to be the voice of all these women. I will also prioritise the development of social policies in the country."
