Sudden closure of ELTA post offices sparks outrage in Sofulu, Bıdıklı, and Tokmakköy
Residents of the Soufli Municipality are facing the sudden loss of local postal services following the immediate closure of ELTA (Hellenic Post) branches in Sofulu, Bıdıklı, and Tokmakköy. Notices announcing the closures were posted on the doors of the affected branches, effective Friday, October 31.
The closures were reportedly announced without prior consultation with local authorities. Deputy Mayor of Sofulu, Dimitris Darousis, described the decision as “unacceptable,” noting that the closures leave the entire municipality effectively without any postal services. Mayor of Dimetoka, Romylos Chatzigiannoglou, also criticized the move, saying the municipal council is likely to issue a formal resolution opposing ELTA’s decision.
The closures are part of a nationwide restructuring plan by ELTA, which includes shutting down a total of 204 branches across Greece. Critics warn that the measure disproportionately affects rural and remote areas, particularly in Evros, creating significant service gaps for residents, businesses, and elderly populations.
Local officials and opposition lawmakers have called on the Ministry of Digital Governance to intervene, either halting or reviewing the closures. Residents and authorities in Central and Northern Meriç now face the prospect of losing access to a crucial public service, despite government assurances of special support for these sensitive border regions.
