During a meeting of the Scientific Risk Assessment Committee, chaired by Greece's Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, Vasilis Kikilias, emergency measures were decided in preparation for the expected adverse weather conditions in the coming days. Heavy rainfall, snow, and strong winds are expected to affect the country's western, northern, and central regions.

Measures Taken

Ban on Heavy Vehicles:
Starting from 18:00 today until 14:00 tomorrow:

On Egnatia Highway, from the Drosohori toll booths to the Polymylos toll booths.
From the Kalambaka E65 junction to the Panagia E06 direction and from Grevena E015 to Egnatia junctions.
Mandatory Chain Use:
Chains are now mandatory for all vehicles in the road networks of Epirus, Western Macedonia, Central Macedonia, Eastern Macedonia-Thrace, and Western Thessaly.

School Closures:
Schools in Western Macedonia will be closed tomorrow.
In Central and Eastern Macedonia, mayors may decide to close schools if necessary.

Weather Conditions and Forecasts:

Rain and Storms:
Heavy rain and storms are expected to begin today in the western regions, with the heaviest rain forecasted for Sunday, intensifying on Monday and Tuesday.

Snowfall:
Intense snowfall is expected in Western and Central Macedonia and Thrace, with snow even at lower altitudes.

Temperature Drop:
Temperatures will drop by 9-10°C in the northern regions and by 3-5°C in other areas.

Wind:
In the northern Aegean, wind speeds may reach up to 8-9 on the Beaufort scale.

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has urged citizens to take precautions and follow these measures:

At Home:
Clean roof gutters, secure outdoor items, and take necessary safety precautions.

Travel:
Use chains on vehicles, ensure your fuel tank is full, and check the weather forecast before traveling.

In Emergencies:
Avoid going outside during storms, snow, or flood risks unless absolutely necessary.
