Rodopi: Arctic temperatures with Kechros leading at -9.9°C

The mountainous settlements of Kechros and Ano Vyrsini recorded the lowest temperatures in Greece as the Rodopi Regional Unit once again became the epicenter of extreme cold. In the early hours of Saturday, February 22, 2025, temperatures plunged to -10.26°C, according to meteorological stations operated by Thrace Weather News.
The lowest recorded temperature was in the mountainous village of Kechros in the Arriana Municipality, where the thermometer dropped to -9.9°C, followed closely by Ano Vyrsini at -9.4°C. Just days earlier, on February 20, Ano Vyrsini had seen an even colder -10.1°C, solidifying the area's status as one of the coldest in the country.
The lowest temperatures recorded in Rodopi on the morning of February 22 by Thrace Weather News and its affiliates (Komotini Aeroclub, Intercultural Primary School of Iasmos, Thrace Tobacco Producers Cooperative, and Restaurant Diamond) were as follows:
- Greece-Bulgaria Border (Nymfaia): -10.26°C
- Kerasia, Iasmos: -10.04°C
- Kechros, Arriana: -9.9°C
- Ano Vyrsini, Arriana: -9.4°C
- Kassitera, Iasmos: -9°C
- Sapes: -8°C
- Dokos, Arriana: -6.82°C
- Fanari, Komotini: -6.4°C
- Restaurant Diamond: -4.8°C
- Kosmio, Komotini: -4.7°C
- Komotini: -3.9°C
- Iasmos: -3.8°C
- Amaxades, Iasmos: -3.6°C
Despite even lower temperatures being recorded in Rodopi, technical issues with meteorological stations prevented them from being registered in the Athens Observatory network.
