Search operation underway for missing resident in the Venna area
Search efforts are continuing to locate an 84-year-old local resident who has reportedly been missing since yesterday in the Venna area.
According to an update released at 10:33 on August 1, 2026, search operations remain ongoing, while divers from Selanik are expected to arrive to assist in the operation.
Earlier, at 10:31, authorities confirmed that a large-scale search and rescue operation was underway after an abandoned tractor was discovered in the Lissos River area. It remains unclear how the tractor ended up at that location or whether someone was riding it at the time, raising concerns that the owner may be in danger.
Rodopi Deputy Regional Governor Manolis Tapatzas, who is present at the scene, stated that the Fire Service is actively involved in the operation, along with volunteers from the Rodopi branch of the Hellenic Red Cross. Drones have also been deployed to support the search efforts.
“It is possible that a local resident attempted to cross the river with the tractor. Unfortunately, the tractor appears to be submerged at some depth, and I cannot say for certain whether the individual was seriously endangered or remains at risk,” Tapatzas said, urging caution until the search is completed and expressing hope that the tractor’s owner will be found safe.
Investigations and search operations are ongoing.
