Rhodope – Meriç inter-regional committee resists gold mining: “We are on alert against gold hunters”
The Rodop-Meriç Inter-Regional Committee, formed to oppose gold mining activities, held a meeting in Alexandroupoli on Friday, November 29. The committee, anticipating that gold companies will soon begin operations in the region, primarily through propaganda and informational campaigns and later possibly through workforce recruitment, issued a statement emphasizing the need to be on high alert.
The committee highlighted that “development and gold mining cannot coexist, as has been officially confirmed once again in recent developments.” Suggesting that development could be achieved through other sectors, they pointed out the importance of staying vigilant: “We are waiting for the next move from the gold hunters who boast about their new managers, who have to prove their worth.”
As a first response, the Rodop-Meriç Inter-Regional Committee decided to publish a petition reaffirming the firm stance of all organizations that have previously participated in the fight against gold mining and metallurgy in the region. The committee urged all members to take action, emphasizing, “Just as in the past, we must become active again to confront them. No one is excess in this fight.”
