Question for the Ottoman cemetery from the communist party
The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) asked the parliament a question about the plundering of the Ottoman Muslim Turkish cemetery in Petinos (Horozlu) village of Avdira (Bulustra) Municipality of Xanthi.
Thessaloniki KKE deputies Yannis Delis and Stoltidis Leonidas asked the Ministry of National Education and Religions, Interior, Culture and Sports ministry’s to stop the work in the Horozlu cemetery immediately.
KKE deputies claimed that Avdira Municipality and some staffs in Xanthi were responsible for the looting of the Ottoman cemetery, which seems to belong to the 17th century.
In the question, where it was stated that the destruction of the historical (17th century) Muslim cemetery in Petinos (Horozlu), with the decision of the mayor, on the grounds that a sports complex would be built, was unacceptable, it was evaluated as an action that causes questions, concerns and indignation to carry out these actions without taking into account that this place is a religious and cultural heritage.
In the question, it was stated that Avdira Municipality was the main responsible for the occurrence of the incident, and it was reminded that local administrators and governments that did not take precautions beforehand for the protection and development of this area are also responsible.
The following statements were included in the question signed by two KKE deputies:
- The work started by the Avdira Municipality in the Muslim cemetery should be stopped immediately and the cemetery should be fixed.
- Under the responsibility of the government, all measures and decisions are taken by the relevant units in order to clarify the property status of the region and to evaluate the region as an archaeological site.
- Carrying out all the necessary studies for the region to be designated as a religious and cultural heritage site.
