A 23-year-old woman has been remanded in custody following the death of her three-year-old child from starvation in Dedeağaç (Alexandroupoli), authorities said.

The mother faces charges of homicide by omission, with possible intent, after appearing before a prosecutor.

The child was taken to hospital last Wednesday but was already dead on arrival. Doctors said the toddler showed signs of severe emaciation and had suffered prolonged extreme malnutrition, which led to death. Authorities believe the child died around 24 hours before being brought to the hospital.

Following the case, the family home was vandalized by unknown individuals, who caused extensive damage. In a separate incident on Monday, the child’s grandfather was attacked and hospitalized in serious condition. He is expected to be discharged.
