Minority NGOs slam destructing the Turkish cemetery
Minority NGOs condemned the destruction of Ottoman-era Turkish cemeteries for building a football pitch
Western Thrace Imam-Hatip High School Graduates Association (BİHLİMDER) pointed out the importance of memory in the cemeteries. “Our cemeteries are our badge of identity, historical memory,” said NGO in their statement.
Another NGO Western Thrace Turkish Teachers Association (BTTÖB) condemned the opportunism of the local government. “It seems that the municipality administrators, who turned our heirloom cemetery into a trophy by taking advantage of an opportunity, considered all kinds of savings on it, regardless of the spirituality of this place,” stated Teachers Association.
Western Thrace Turks Solidarity Association (BTTDD) said “You are afraid to even of our ancestors who have passed away to eternity, you are trying to take revenge. As a result of the attack and destruction, which is a shame for humanity, our historical cemetery was tried to be destroyed,” stressing the traumatic historical consciousness of Greece.
Western Thrace Turkish Mosques Religious Officials Association (BTCDGDD) emphasized the deep hurt of the conscience among the Minority by destructing the cemetery.
Lastly, Western Thrace Turks Association in Europe (ABTTF) called Greece to imitate Turkiye on the subject of preserving the historical monuments saying “We invite our country's authorities at local and national level to take as an example the steps of our homeland for the protection of historical artifacts inherited from different cultures, and to carefully protect the historical artifacts inherited from the Ottoman Empire, which represents a great cultural richness for our country.”
