Metropolitans in Western Thrace, affiliated to the Istanbul Greek Patriarchate, sent a letter to the prime minister to prevent the religious rights of the Turkish Minority.
Four metropolitans in Western Thrace, which came to the fore with their scandals related to the religious issues of the Turkish Minority rather than their religious duties, expressed their opposition to the regulation that envisages the election of muftis in Western Thrace in a letter they sent to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The Western Thrace Turks, who consider the excessive involvement of the metropolitans in the religious affairs of Muslims as scandalous initiatives that do not contribute to the peace in the region, are reactive.
According to Estia newspaper, which draws attention with its anti-Turkish Minority publications, in the letter sent to the Speaker of the Parliament Konstandinos Tasulas, the metropolitans of İskeçe (Xanthi), Maronia-Gümülcine (Komotini), Dedeağaç (Alexandroupoli) and Dimetoka (Didimoteichon) stated that they were against the possible mufti election and demanded that it be abandoned.
In the letter sent to the Prime Minister, it was stated that Dora Bakogiannis, Head of the Thrace Development Commission, was preparing to report to the Prime Minister regarding the regulation of the election of muftis by a selection committee, and the metropolitans emphasized that they were against such an arrangement.
In the news, it was claimed that an unnamed metropolitan spoke to Estia newspaper and said, "We will not legalize the Khomeinis in Thrace." It is stated that the metropolitan in question confirmed that they sent the four-page letter to the Prime Minister and the speaker of the parliament, adding, “Muftis in Greece are also judges. Therefore, it cannot be determined by choice. Thrace was never and cannot be a caliphate.
