It was reported that mercury was found in the drinking water of the minority primary school in Karaköy, located in the area known as the middle arm of Xanthi. On 4 May Thursday, following the incident, the authorities went to the region and made an investigation.

As a result of the investigation, mercury was found in the drinking water in the fountains in the garden of the school and cleaning works have started.

After the incident, four students and two teachers were taken to Xanthi State Hospital for medical check-ups as a precautionary measure and were reported to be in good health.
