‘Menetler river being repaired’ announce Region Councillors

For the repair of Kocaçay (Lissos) the pass between Sirkeli (Fillira) and Kozlukebir (Arriana), known as “Menenler Stream”, East Macedonian Thrace (DMT) Region President Christos Metios signed a contract with the contractor company.

On the subject, DMT Region Vice President Tarkan Multaza, DMT Region Advisors Ahmet İbram and Cihan İmamoğlu made a joint statement.

In the statement, it was stated that the Kocaçay passage in question had to be completed within 3 months, in accordance with the signed contract.

The statement made by the members of the Turkish Minority Provincial Assembly regarding the issue is as follows:

“For the repair of the ‘Irish crossing’ on Kocaçay  between Sirkeli, and Kozlukebir in Rhodope Province, which was badly damaged due to heavy rains in January 2021, East Macedonian Thrace Region (DMT) President Christos Metios, signed the contract with the contractor company.

Although the tender for the repair of the gate had been made before, bureaucratic obstacles delayed the signing of the contract.

The signed contract stipulates that the works in question will be completed within 3 months.

The passage in question is important in that it passes through Kocaçay, the largest river of the Rhodope province, and connects the two main villages of Kozlukebir municipality, Kozlukebir and Sirkeli villages. It is also important for the farmers in the region to go to their fields.

Due to the damage to the pass due to heavy rains, the people of the region are forced to use the bridge on the Komotini - Şapçı highway as an alternative. This means about 20 kilometres more.

This crossing will be used to serve our farmers and also as an alternative crossing for military crossings, despite the new bridge being built approximately 50 meters next to it.

The work includes the repair of the completely destroyed road (approximately 80 m in length) and the repair of the flood-damaged concrete walkway.

In addition, the riverbed will be cleared of large volumes of sand lumps that impede the smooth flow of water and further reduce the width of the riverbed.

Finally, a series of stone-filled wire boxes (Sazanet) will be placed at the bottom of the embankments and other necessary places to protect them from future damage.”
