Livestock compensation 2025: Eastern Macedonia and Thrace ranks second in national allocation

A total of €201,355 was allocated to Xanthi to support livestock and prevent animal diseases, according to decisions issued by the Ministry of Rural Development and Food. While Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT) ranked second nationwide in the initial distribution of funds, the region was completely absent from the third allocation.

First Allocation: €850,782 for EMT – Xanthi Ranks Second Within the Region
Under the first decision, with a total budget of €2,506,295.40, the EMT region received €850,782, making it the second-highest recipient after Thessaly (€970,220), followed by Central Greece (€293,603).

Breakdown for EMT:

Evros (Alexandroupoli): €334,990

Rhodope: €140,376

Xanthi: €193,302

Drama: €64,638

Kavala: €117,476

Evros (Orestiada): Not specified

Xanthi held the second-highest share within EMT, after Alexandroupoli. The funds were allocated under the March 2025 Joint Ministerial Decision and support veterinary measures for livestock disease control and eradication.

Second Allocation: €42,463 for EMT – Drama Leads Local Distribution
The second decision, issued on June 23, 2025, had a total value of €387,641.87, of which €42,463.07 went to EMT—a significant decrease compared to the first allocation.

Regional distribution:

Drama: €21,610

Xanthi: €8,053.07

Rhodope: €6,420

Kavala: €3,690

Evros (Orestiada): €2,690

Drama received the largest share within EMT, with Xanthi following. The funds focus on prevention and control of animal diseases, as outlined in the Joint Ministerial Decision (Gov. Gazette 1011/5-3-2025). Allocations were based on EU and national disease control program criteria.

Third Allocation: No Funds for EMT
The third and most recent decision, with a total budget of €343,085.38, did not include any funding for the EMT region. Instead, all resources were allocated to Central Greece, Western Macedonia, Crete, and other areas.

The complete absence of EMT from this round has raised concerns, especially given that the region is actively involved in all major livestock monitoring and disease control programs.
