Legal warning letter sent to Millet Newspaper
240 religion teachers' (ierodidaskalos) association sent a legal warning letter to Millet Newspaper for the 'Hit after hit to the Turkish Minority from the Mitsotakis government' (also shortened as 'Mitsotakis government continues assimilation policies over religion' in Millet News) titled news article published on August 1.

The 240 ierodidaskalos are religion teachers appointed by the Greek state who most of them are insufficient and unqualified on teaching lessons about the Islamic religion.

In the warning letter signed by Memet Mustafa as the head of the 'Ierodidaskalos Association', it was stated that he was uncomfortable with some expressions in the article and that Millet Newspaper should apologize within 10 days for these statements, otherwise legal rights would be used.

In the letter, in which mistranslated parts were included, it was claimed that 'Ieordidaskalos' were insulted and Millet writers were religious fanatics with this news.

However, the truth is that applications of the Greek State which are not publicly accepted were disputed.

From the administration of Millet Newspaper, the necessary reply was sent to the Association legally through the lawyer. In the warning sent, it was reminded that by distorting the integrity of a news text and mistranslation only certain parts of it, do not have a legal basis, and that the legal requirements of intimidating press freedom in democratic societies with such methods are reserved.

What is Greece up to?

What is Greece trying to do?

Within the framework of the assimilation policies it implements against the Turkish Minority, Greece has accelerated its efforts in recent years and seized religious and educational institutions with laws and regulations that erode the status of "minority".

The state, which banned the ethnic identity of the minority by closing the associations that used the word "Turk" in their names, now aims to turn the Western Thrace Turkish Minority into "Greek Muslims" by eliminating the status of "minority" with laws against human rights. To this end, it seizes minority institutions with salaried religious officials and similar staff and shapes them arbitrarily.

When the Western Thrace Turkish Minority community reacts to the interventions and pressures that violate human rights and international agreements, the state mechanism takes action and resorts to silencing methods in different ways.
