İskeçe 3rd General High School students boycott classes and march over shared school building
Students at the 3rd General High School in İskeçe (Xanthi) boycotted classes and marched to the city center on October 5, protesting arrangements under which students from the 3rd Middle School are also being taught in the same building.
Students at the 3rd General High School in İskeçe (Xanthi) staged a protest on Monday, October 5, refusing to attend classes before leaving the school building and marching toward the city center.
The students are protesting the decision to accommodate students from the 3rd Middle School in the same building after the middle school was evacuated at the beginning of the academic year over safety concerns.
The high school students emphasized that their protest is not directed against the middle school students themselves. Instead, they said their objections concern the physical and operational conditions created by having two schools operate in the same building.
STUDENTS RAISE CONCERNS OVER FACILITIES AND SCHOOL OPERATIONS
A document outlining the students’ demands highlights concerns involving classrooms, laboratories, sports facilities, the schoolyard, toilets, the cafeteria and security conditions.
The students also raised concerns about arrangements for conducting examinations, arguing that the current setup creates additional difficulties for both schools.
One of their main proposals is for the 3rd General High School to operate in the morning and the 3rd Middle School in the afternoon.
Students argue that a split-shift arrangement would reduce overcrowding in the building and provide more suitable teaching and working conditions for both schools.
STUDENTS TAKE DEMANDS TO XANTHI MUNICIPALITY
Following the boycott, the students left the school and marched to İskeçe Municipality, where they presented their demands to local authorities.
The protest comes amid continuing discussions over how to accommodate students from the 3rd Middle School after its relocation from its previous premises on safety grounds.
