While the fires in Greece continued on the 4th day, the university hospital in the city was evacuated due to the fire in Alexandroupoli.

The fire that broke out in Alexandroupoli on 19 August could not be brought under control on the 4th day due to the strong winds effective in the region.

As the fire approached the garden of Alexandroupoli University Hospital, some of the patients were transferred to hospitals in nearby cities by ambulances. Some patients, including about 30 people who were being treated in the intensive care unit, were transferred to tents and a ferry at Alexandroupoli harbour.

After the evacuation, explosion sounds were heard from the hospital, which were thought to be caused by oxygen cylinders.

In Alexandroupoli, a nursing home for about 130 people was evacuated as a precautionary measure due to the approaching fire.

Many houses and buildings were burnt and agricultural fields were damaged in Alexandroupoli and Evros region.

Many settlements were evacuated for security reasons. Public areas such as gymnasiums were opened for evacuees.

Fire in Aspropirgos

A fire broke out in Aspropirgos, north-west of Athens. Kineta-Ano Liosia train services were stopped due to the fire that broke out in three points.

Some settlements in Aspropirgos were also evacuated.

Fire in Rhodope continues to threaten settlements

In the Rhodope province of Western Thrace, where Komotini and its villages are located, the fire, which affected the villages where Turks are in the majority yesterday, headed towards the mountainous area today. Many houses and vehicles were burnt in the villages.

A shepherd trying to protect his animals from the flames in Viotia, about 120 kilometres north of Athens, and a migrant in the settlement of Kavacik (Lefkimi) near Dadias in the Evros region, about 20 kilometres from the Turkish border, died due to the fire.
