Hakan Fidan: We continue efforts to protect the rights of the Turkish Minority in Western Thrace

On December 11, 2024, Türkiye's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hakan Fidan, addressed the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) during the budget discussions for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant institutions for the year 2025.

In his speech, Fidan covered a wide range of topics, including Türkiye's relations with Greece. He emphasized the ongoing efforts to maintain positive relations with Greece and continue cooperation on mutual agendas.

Fidan also highlighted the protection of the rights of the Turkish minority in Western Thrace and Turkish nationals living on the 12 islands, stating: "We continue our efforts to protect the rights of the Turkish minority in Western Thrace and our fellow citizens on the 12 islands. At the same time, we are firmly safeguarding our rights and interests in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean, both on the ground and at the negotiation table."

Addressing the issue of military buildup by the Republic of Cyprus, Fidan warned that the arms race could escalate tensions in the region. He stressed that Türkiye would never abandon its stance on Cyprus, emphasizing the Turkish Cypriot people's right to sovereign equality and equal international status. Fidan affirmed that Türkiye continues to raise this issue on all platforms, including the United Nations.
