Gümülcine pastry shop owner named “Tradesman of the Month” for preserving tradition and expanding across Europe
Ersin Mehmet, owner of the long-established Nedim Pastanesi, has been named “Tradesman of the Month” for April by the Rhodope Chamber of Tradesmen and Craftsmen, in recognition of his commitment to tradition, quality, and sustainable production.
The award highlights Mehmet’s role in maintaining a family legacy that dates back to 1950, when the business was founded in Komotini by Nedim Mehmet as a modest confectionery shop. Despite challenging conditions, the founder gained local recognition after developing the now-iconic dessert known as “sucuk lokum,” which went on to become a culinary symbol of the city and the wider Western Thrace region.
Over the decades, the business has grown while preserving its traditional production methods and quality-focused approach. Under Ersin Mehmet’s leadership, the pastry shop has expanded its ассортимент by introducing new flavors and products, blending innovation with heritage.
Today, Nedim Pastanesi exports its products to several European countries, including Germany, France, and Belgium, while continuing to contribute to the local economy through employment and regional branding.
In its official statement, the chamber emphasized that the award represents not only individual entrepreneurial success but also the preservation and promotion of traditional craftsmanship in the region.
