Gümülcine Municipality closed today
The Municipality of Gümülcine has suspended municipal services today in support of a decision taken by the General Assembly of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE).
During its regular meeting held on Friday, December 12, 2025, the Komotini Municipal Council approved by majority vote the symbolic closure of all municipal services on Tuesday, December 16, 2025. The action coincides with the day the State Budget is being voted on and is intended as a form of protest.
The decision, proposed by Mayor Yannis Garanis and recorded as Municipal Council Resolution No. 290/2025, states that the closure aims to draw attention to the chronic underfunding of local authorities and to exert political pressure.
According to the approved resolution, all municipal services under the Municipality of Gümülcine would remain symbolically closed on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the day of the State Budget vote.
The resolution emphasizes that the action is grounded in Articles 101 and 102 of the Constitution, which guarantee the administrative and financial autonomy of municipalities, and stresses the state’s obligation to provide local authorities with adequate resources and powers.
The Municipal Council noted that insufficient funding and the lack of appropriate institutional tools prevent the municipality from effectively fulfilling its responsibilities, posing risks to citizens’ daily lives and well-being.
It was also underlined that the mobilization is not a populist gesture but a constitutional and institutional demand aimed at safeguarding the sustainability, autonomy, and dignity of local government.
The Municipal Council called on citizens to support the initiative, stressing that strengthening local authorities and increasing their resources is essential for the common good. The Mayor was authorized to implement the decision. Municipal officials clarified that the action is not directed against citizens, but seeks to highlight the need for adequate funding to ensure stronger and more effective municipal services.
