Under a new Local Government Law adopted in Greece, all municipalities have been granted the authority to provide a birth allowance of up to €3,000 per child, at their own discretion.
The measure, previously announced by Interior Minister Theodoros Livanios, has now been formally enacted through the new legislation. Municipalities will be able to offer a one-off cash benefit to families who are permanent residents and officially registered in the municipality, under terms and conditions set by the municipal council.
Key points of the regulation include:
- The allowance may reach up to €3,000 per child
- The benefit is tax-exempt and not subject to seizure
- It cannot be offset against debts owed to the state, banks, or municipalities
- It is not included in income calculations for other social benefits
In addition to birth allowances, municipalities will also be able to provide other forms of social support to students, young people, families, and financially vulnerable citizens.
The regulation aims to support young families and help boost Greece’s birth rate, according to official statements.
