Greek MP Stylianidis accuses mosque congregation's response of "Turkish nationalism terror"

Greek MP Evripidis Stylianidis, representing New Democracy in Rhodope, accused those who reacted to a recent provocation at Çınar Mosque in Xanthi of engaging in "Turkish nationalism terror." In his article titled "Who Will Stop the Terror of Turkish Nationalism in Thrace?" in Foni Tis Rodopis, he criticized the Turkish government’s influence in the region and questioned the Greek Foreign Ministry's actions to curb Turkish intervention, specifically calling out Erdoğan's cooperation policies.

The incident in question occurred after an event at Xanthi Medrese on October 11, 2024, when appointed religious leaders participated in Friday prayers at Çınar Mosque, where tensions rose among the congregation. Stilyanidis described political figures who opposed the mosque's attendees as fanatical and extremist.

In response, European Western Thrace Turkish Federation (ABTTF) President Halit Habip Oğlu condemned Stilyanidis’ remarks, calling them fanatical. He argued that this rhetoric undermines free expression and that the provocation was indeed a threat to the community’s autonomy, emphasizing that Western Thrace Muslims oppose the state's appointed religious figures. Habip Oğlu expressed disbelief at the labeling of the congregation’s peaceful reaction as terrorism, urging Stilyanidis to recognize this stance as a violation of thought and expression freedom.
