Greece displeased with inclusion of the Western Thrace issue in bilateral disputes

Government Spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis responded to Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan’s statement on January 10, 2025, suggesting that the Western Thrace issue should be included among the disputes between Greece and Türkiye.

Marinakis dismissed these remarks as “baseless allegations,” emphasizing that the sole dispute between the two nations pertains to the delimitation of the continental shelf and the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.

During a press conference in Istanbul, Fidan highlighted the positive trajectory of Turkish-Greek relations, stating that this atmosphere creates a favorable environment for resolving long-standing issues. He noted Türkiye's focus on addressing both the Aegean disputes and matters concerning Western Thrace.

Halit Habip Oğlu, President of the Federation of Western Thrace Turks in Europe (ABTTF), criticized Greece for applying double standards. He pointed out that Greece actively supports the Greek minority in Albania, even fielding a dual Albanian-Greek national as a candidate in European Parliament elections, while consistently opposing Türkiye’s advocacy for the Western Thrace Turkish community. Habip Oğlu called for genuine goodwill and dialogue, stating that unresolved issues can only be settled through mutual understanding and cooperation.
