FEP Party criticizes minority school closures in Western Thrace: “Double standards in education are unacceptable”
The Friendship, Equality, Peace (FEP) Party has strongly condemned Greece’s education policies following the closure of Turkish Minority schools in Western Thrace. In a video statement shared on social media, the party accused the government of applying “double standards” in its treatment of minority education.
The video highlighted the inconsistency of shutting down Turkish Minority schools on the grounds of low student numbers, while elsewhere in Greece schools remain open with only a handful of students. As examples, the party pointed to a primary school in Argiri village, Karditsa, operating with just one student, and another on Keçi Island with only two students.
Quoting Education Minister Sofia Zacharaki’s remarks that such schools would “keep our national lanterns shining,” DEB questioned why the Turkish Minority in Western Thrace is not accorded the same importance.
“What is Western Thrace? Why is one place described as light, while another is condemned to darkness?” the party asked in the video, stressing that the education rights of the Turkish Minority are fundamental and must not be ignored.
FEP further declared:
“We will not turn a blind eye to dirty games forcing our minority into migration and threatening its existence. Minority education is a basic right. You cannot disregard it—and we will not allow you to.”
