Evros: New Record for road arrivals at border customs in 2024

A new record in road arrivals was set at the border customs of Evros in 2024, according to official data from the Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation (INSETE). A total of 2,632,237 arrivals were recorded at the border points of Kipi, Kastanies, Ormenio, and Kyprinos—significantly higher than the 1,977,596 entries documented in 2023.

Kipi customs remained the busiest entry point in the region, with 1.2 million arrivals, ranking it third nationwide after Promachonas (2.9 million) and Evzoni (2.5 million). Traffic at Kastanies increased by 45%, while Kyprinos saw a remarkable 168% surge, confirming the growing appeal of cross-border tourism in the area.

However, this increase came with major delays for drivers, especially at Kipi and Kastanies, where long waiting times were frequent. Despite repeated announcements about infrastructure upgrades—including new lanes and renovated facilities—no actual work has yet begun.

Deputy Minister of Macedonia–Thrace, Konstantinos Gioulekas, recently claimed that tender documents have been finalized and that construction at Kipi is about to begin, contradicting his own statement from August 2024, in which he had assured the public that the project would be completed by this year’s Easter.
