Due to the fires continuing in Greece for 8 days, the settlements in Western Thrace were evacuated.

The Civil Protection Unit sent a message to those in the villages of Hasanlar (Avra), Hotallar (Atarni) and Sarlar (Plaka) and asked them to leave the area.

The villages were evacuated as a precautionary measure due to the approaching fire.

Stating that the next 48 hours are critical for the fire in Western Thrace, the authorities reported that if the fire cannot be extinguished, it may reach a dense forest area consisting of oak trees.

Authorities warned that the fire could get completely out of control with the Lodos that will blow two days later.

Dozens of settlements were evacuated in the fires that have been going on for 8 days in the country.

Fires continue in other regions

The fire that broke out on Andros Island today has not yet been brought under control.

Fires continued throughout the day in Evia Island, Mesinia, Pirgos, Fthiotida.

Although there was no major rainfall in the Attiki Region, small-scale fires broke out in dozens of different areas due to lightning strikes.

33 per cent of the forest area in Attiki burnt in the last 7 years

According to the report of the Greek Meteorological Office, more than 600 thousand acres of land were burnt down in 12 major fires in the Attiki Region, including the capital Athens, in the last 7 years.

Thirty-three per cent of the forested area in the region burned in the last 7 years.
