The Greek government has approved an €86 million rehabilitation initiative to restore forest areas in the Meriç region that were devastated by recent wildfires, marking one of the country's largest post-fire environmental recovery projects.

The programme includes large-scale reforestation, erosion control measures, restoration of damaged ecosystems and infrastructure improvements aimed at reducing the long-term environmental impact of the fires. Authorities said the initiative is designed to strengthen climate resilience while helping the affected forests recover more rapidly.

The rehabilitation effort is expected to support biodiversity conservation, improve flood prevention and enhance the sustainability of forest ecosystems in the region. The investment forms part of Greece's broader strategy to restore areas affected by increasingly severe wildfires linked to climate change.
