Emergency meeting held in Rhodope for fires

The Rhodope Province Civil Defense Coordination Board convened extraordinarily to discuss fire precautions. Measures to be taken against fires were discussed at the meeting. The extraordinary meeting of the Rhodope Civil Defense Coordination Board was held in the former governorship building of Rhodope.

The work of the Civil Defense Coordination Board was coordinated by the Rhodope Unit Responsible State Deputy Nikos Çalikidis, East Macedonia and Thrace State Presidency Civil Defense Directorate Head Konstantinos Huvardas, Rhodope Unit Civil Defense Head Konstantinos Papantoniu.

Representatives of the fire brigade, army, police, non-governmental organizations, officials from the relevant service and other organizations in the Rhodope region attended the meeting.

At the meeting, the implementation of traffic ban measures in Rhodope region forests, parks in forested areas and areas with dense trees on days when the danger index is high (category 3) and very high (category 5) according to the Daily Fire Risk Prediction Map of the General Secretariat of Civil Defense was discussed.

Due to the high (category 3) and very high (category 5) fire risk, the Nimfea forest, Meşe village, "Profiti Ilias" North İasmos, movement for vehicles and people is not allowed.

However, the prohibitions are not valid for those who reside in the specified regions and who have to pass through those regions due to their jobs, according to Article 130 of the Law No. 4926/2022.

According to the fire regulation, an administrative fine of 300 euros will be imposed on citizens for each violation of the ban.

At the Civil Defense Coordination Board meeting, it was recommended that occupational groups (farmers, animal breeders and beekeepers) avoid work using machines that can generate sparks and actions that may cause fire due to negligence.

Nikos Çalikidis, Deputy Head of the Rhodope Unit, said in a statement, "We call on all our citizens to be especially careful during the fire (summer) season. It is possible to use the road of the Nimfea forest, for touristic facilities only. It is above the 3rd category without deviating from the route to do another activity. It is the duty and obligation of all of us to protect and preserve our forested areas on days with a high risk index.”
