Electricity expenses of Xanthi Municipality increases by 103 percent

According to the information in the press release published by the Municipality of Xanthi, it was stated that the electricity costs of the municipality increased by 103 percent in February 2022.

Xanthi Mayor Manolis Tsepelis, who attended the extraordinary general assembly meeting of the Union of Greek Municipalities, stated that the price hikes also affected local governments a lot and said that urgent measures should be taken against the "energy tsunami".

At the Extraordinary General Assembly of the Union of Greek Municipalities held in Athens-Vuliagmeni on Friday, March 18, it was emphasized that in order municipalities to provide their routine services some measures should be taken against the price hikes.

In the General Assembly it was also stated that all local governments should also be prepared against the crisis in Ukraine.

Xanthi Mayor Tsepelis stated that Xanthi Municipality was also affected by the "chunami of expensiveness" experienced around the world in recent months, adding that the central government must provide additional support to local governments so that the municipalities can continue to offer all services.

Stating that they will not allow excessive price hikes to be reflected on municipal services, Tsepelis emphasized that the price hikes should not be placed on the residents of the municipality.

Tsepelis also compared some expenditures of the municipality in 2021 and 2022.

He stated that electricity expenses in January 2022 increased by 82 percent compared to 2021, and electricity expenses in February 2022 increased by 103 percent compared to the previous year.

Noting that electricity expenses have also increased excessively in the Water and Sewerage Department, Tsepelis noted that basic services may be interrupted if the government does not provide additional assistance and financial support to municipalities and municipal units for electricity expenses.

Petsas, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs, who attended the general assembly where other problems of local governments besides electricity expenses were mentioned, said that all the problems expressed in the general assembly were extremely serious, all the proposals presented by the government for the local governments to continue their basic services will be evaluated, and the decisions that will "relax" the local administrators will be up soon.
