Eid festivities at the Turkish Consulate in Komotini: Western Thrace united in celebration

The traditional Eid celebration at the Turkish Consulate in Komotini brought together members of the Turkish Minority of Western Thrace in an atmosphere of unity, joy, and brotherhood. The event, held on Saturday, June 7, was attended by a large number of guests from across the region.
Hosted by Turkish Consul General Aykut Ünal and his wife İlayda Ünal, the gathering offered a warm setting for community members to exchange holiday greetings and share in the festive spirit.
Among the prominent attendees was Hakan Çavuşoğlu, former Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey, Chairman of the Human Rights Committee of the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Member of the Presidential Legal Policies Board, and a parliamentarian from Bursa with roots in Western Thrace.
Strong turnout from local leadership
Held between 10:00 and 11:30 a.m., the event attracted a wide array of political, religious, and community leaders from the Turkish Minority of Western Thrace, including:
- Mustafa Trampa, Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Turkish Minority of Western Thrace and Mufti of Xanthi
- İbrahim Şerif, Mufti of Komotini
- Hüseyin Zeybek, MP from Xanthi (New Left)
- Özgür Ferhat, MP from Rhodope (New Left)
- Çiğdem Asafoğlu, President of the Friendship, Equality, Peace (FEP) Party
- Ahmet Kurt, Mayor of Mustafçova
- Erdem Hüseyin, Mayor of Kozlukebir
- Caner İmam, Mayor of Iasmos
- Yannis Garanis, Mayor of Komotini
- Apostolos Ioannou, Mayor of Maroneia-Sapes
In addition, numerous local officials, heads of minority associations, and members of the community were in attendance.
The gathering became a meaningful occasion for reinforcing the bonds of friendship and solidarity, while also serving as a reminder of the strong cultural and emotional ties between the Turkish Minority and the Republic of Turkey.
In a post shared on the Consulate’s official Facebook page, the following message was conveyed:
“We shared the joy of Eid al-Adha with our compatriots and friends at our celebration, which was honored by the presence of our former Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Hakan Çavuşoğlu.”
This year’s event reaffirmed the spirit of togetherness that defines the Turkish community of Western Thrace during festive occasions.
