DESFA: Hydrogen pipeline project from Karperi, Serres to Komotini set to begin in 2025
DESFA's project to develop a new hydrogen-compatible natural gas pipeline is advancing, with a budget of €310.56 million. This initiative aims to eliminate congestion in Greece's gas transmission system and support clean energy goals.
The project involves doubling the high-pressure pipeline between Karperi and Komotini, with environmental studies expected to be submitted in November and the implementation tender set for early 2025. The pipeline, measuring 30 inches in diameter and extending 215 kilometers, is expected to be operational by December 2026, with full integration into the natural gas system by March 2027.
Designed to accommodate hydrogen transport, the new pipeline will enhance flexibility within Greece's energy network to meet future clean energy demands. This project will alleviate bottlenecks in the gas transmission system, improve liquidity in Greece’s natural gas market, and pave the way for future hydrogen acceptance.
