Deniz Memet: 'Farmers' struggles and PASOK's agricultural policy'

PASOK-KINAL Member Deniz Memet adresses to farmers' economic difficulties.
Farmers and rural communities in the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region are facing severe economic difficulties. Rising production costs, declining agricultural product prices, and lack of government support have created a financial deadlock for farmers.
A Sector in Crisis
The cost of farming now exceeds the income generated from agricultural products, leading many farmers into debt. Loans, tax obligations, insurance contributions, and supplier payments have piled up, forcing some to abandon farming altogether. The region remains one of the least developed within the EU, and the Greek government's unfulfilled pre-election promises have only worsened the situation.
Many young people are leaving agriculture due to financial insecurity, opting instead to migrate abroad for better job opportunities. A major issue is the lack of modern agricultural education, preventing farmers from using scientifically proven methods to maximize productivity in 2025.
The government's responsibility is to support farmers by providing:
- Training on new technologies,
- Access to high-quality seeds and materials,
- Fair market prices for their products,
- A sustainable framework for agricultural production.
PASOK’s Agricultural Policy Conference
The PASOK party will address these critical issues at the Eastern Macedonia and Thrace Regional Conference, scheduled for March 15, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Chris & Eve Hotel. The party's agricultural policy proposals will be presented and discussed during the event.
