Coordination Body of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace meets on flood preparedness for 2025–2026
The Coordination Body of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMTH) convened on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, in Gümülcine (Komotini) to address flood preparedness for the period 2025–2026.
Regional Governor and Chair of the Regional Civil Protection Coordination Body, Christodoulos Topsidis, emphasized that “cooperation, prevention, and readiness are key to tackling flood risks.”
During the meeting, participants reviewed completed, ongoing, and planned actions aimed at mitigating flooding, including:
Cleaning of streams and torrents across all regional units.
Flood protection works in every prefecture.
Reinforcement and restoration of embankments along the Meriç (Evros) and Erythropotamos rivers.
Maintenance of telemetry and early warning systems to ensure reliable data for decision-making.
Topsidis underlined that the region remains highly vulnerable to flood risks due to its extensive but fragile hydrological system, including major rivers such as the Meriç (Evros) and Karasu (Nestos), which face cross-border pressures, as well as dozens of smaller streams that threaten communities and infrastructure.
“Against this danger, coordination is our most valuable tool,” he stressed, thanking all agencies for their cooperation in protecting human life, property, and the natural environment of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
The meeting was held at the “G. Pavlidis” hall of the Rhodope Regional Unit building, with the participation of Deputy Regional Governors, the Fire Brigade, Police, the 4th Army Corps, the Coast Guard, the Regional Association of Municipalities, technical directorates, forestry services, utility companies (ADMIE, DEDDIE, OSE, TAP), and volunteer organizations.
