The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has placed the regional unit of Meriç under a “Red Code” alert from Wednesday through Monday due to a significant risk of flooding caused by rising water levels in the Meriç River, which threaten to overflow its banks.

The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has placed the regional unit of Meriç under a “Red Code” alert from Wednesday through Monday due to a significant risk of flooding caused by rising water levels in the Meriç River, which threaten to overflow its banks.

According to an official statement from the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection:

“The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has declared a ‘Red Code’ alert for the Meriç Regional Unit of the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, effective from Wednesday, February 18, 2026, until Monday, February 23, 2026. 

Based on information provided by the Regional Governor and an assessment conducted by the Risk Evaluation Committee, there is a high probability of flooding in the area as a result of the rising and potential overflow of the Meriç River.”
