Representatives from the petroleum sector and local politicians are urging the government to revise the tax regime on heating oil in northern Greece, particularly in Thrace.

Speaking to ERT Komotini, George Tzampazlis, Vice President of the Panhellenic Federation of Petroleum Products Traders (POPEK), advocated for direct subsidies at the pump instead of the current heating allowance system. He argued that such a measure would make heating more affordable for residents of remote regions like Thrace.

Tzampazlis also called on local politicians and municipal authorities to intensify their efforts to push for these changes.

Burhan Baran, a PASOK-KINAL MP from Xanthi, pledged to bring the issue before Parliament following the budget discussions. He expressed willingness to collaborate with colleagues from across party lines to introduce a special heating regime for northern Greece.

Baran emphasized that this policy shift is crucial not only for the safety and health of citizens but also for environmental protection, aiming to prevent tragedies like the recent family disaster in Magiko, Xanthi.
