Biosecurity measures intensified in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace region

The Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace has significantly strengthened its biosecurity measures in response to animal health risks, expanding its prevention network across key livestock transport routes.

Regional authorities confirmed that new disinfection stations, protective trenches, and hygiene control gates have been deployed throughout the region to reduce the risk of infectious animal diseases.

Tightened Controls on Livestock Transport
Officials stated that vehicles transporting live animals, feed, and milk are now subject to strict inspections. These measures are considered critical in preventing potential outbreaks and safeguarding the region’s agricultural economy.

The regional administration is working in close coordination with police and port authorities to ensure continuous monitoring and enforcement in the field.

High-Level Coordination in Gümülcine
A coordination meeting held in Gümülcine brought together Regional Governor Hristodoulos Topsidis and Police Director Lambros Tsiaras, where officials agreed on tightening inspections and enhancing inter-agency cooperation.

Authorities emphasized that sustained enforcement and institutional coordination are essential to maintaining effective disease prevention across the region.

No Reported Cases, Preventive Alert Active
Experts confirmed that no cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been detected so far in the region. However, a Special Civil Protection Mobilization Plan has been in effect since April 7 as a precautionary measure.

The plan enables rapid response mechanisms in case of any suspected outbreak and ensures preparedness across veterinary and civil protection services.

Farmers Urged to Comply with Regulations
Authorities stressed that the success of the biosecurity strategy depends heavily on compliance by livestock producers. Information campaigns and upcoming training sessions for farmers are also planned to strengthen awareness and adherence to safety protocols.

The initiative reflects a broader effort to protect animal health, stabilize agricultural production, and prevent economic disruption in the region.
