About the book
The book explores the impact of modernity and popular culture on society, delving into themes such as equality, freedom, identity, and science. Mahmut reflects on how terms like equality and freedom are often discussed by young people today, yet he questions the true nature of these concepts and their implications.
Mahmut also addresses the influence of global changes on Western Thrace, observing that its society, too, has been swept up in consumerism and rapid modern shifts. He critiques a pleasure-driven lifestyle, which he argues has led to social media-fueled displays of happiness masking real struggles. Young families facing financial difficulties are increasingly considering emigration, which he sees as symptomatic of the modern era’s hollow promises.
Mahmut emphasizes the importance of returning to meaningful communication and deeper, reflective thought as pathways out of this “illusion.” With the book’s title, he underscores the power of words and traditional wisdom as tools to counter modern materialism, advocating for a return to cultural and spiritual values.
