Backlash in Evros over the closure and merger of Military Camps

The local community in Evros has expressed outrage, claiming that the reduction of military presence weakens the defense of this strategically critical border region.

The Hellenic National Defense General Staff (GEETHA) has announced the implementation of a directive from the Minister of National Defense to begin the relocation and consolidation of military units. This plan involves the closure and merger of 10 military camps nationwide by the end of 2024, with four located in Evros. The remaining six are distributed across Laconia, Malakasa (Attica), Phthiotis, Ioannina, Thessaloniki, and Kos.

According to ERT Orestiada, the decision has triggered significant reactions in Evros, where residents argue that the closures not only undermine national defense but also harm the local economy and population retention in this border region, which holds critical national importance.

The military camps being shuttered in Evros include:

"Captain Evangelos Matsianis" in Lepti, Orestiada
"Miltiades Zachos" in Nea Vyssa
"Dimitrios Anagnostou" in Peplos
The National Guard Battalion at "Theodoros Abatzopoulos" in Metaxades

These units will be merged with nearby camps as part of the consolidation process.

Defense ministry sources emphasize that the aim of these reforms is to modernize operational structures and strengthen merged units using resources from the closures. A second phase of camp closures and consolidations is scheduled to be completed by March 31, 2025.
