ASHURA: Muharram, the first month in the Islamic lunar calendar. It is recommended to fast on the day of Ashura (10th of Muharram) based on narrations attributed to Muhammad. The fast is celebrated in order to commemorate the day when Moses and his followers were saved from Pharaoh by God by creating a path in the Red Sea (The Exodus). Ashura also marks the death of Husayn ibn Ali, a grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and members of his immediate family in the Battle of Karbala.
