Arrests made in tragic drowning of 11-year-old girl in Imaret, Rhodope

The tragic drowning of an 11-year-old girl on August 1, 2025, at Imaret (Imeros) Beach in the region of Rhodope has taken a dramatic turn, as Greek authorities have made four arrests in connection with the incident. The case has deeply shaken the local community.

According to an official statement from the Hellenic Coast Guard, four individuals were arrested during the preliminary investigation into the circumstances surrounding the young girl's death.

Among those arrested is the victim’s own sister, who faces charges under Article 306 of the Greek Penal Code for “exposure to danger.” In addition, three other individuals were arrested under Article 307 of the Penal Code for “failure to render assistance”:

  • A 43-year-old Greek man, seasonal speedboat operator
  • A 47-year-old Greek municipal employee
  • A 27-year-old female seasonal lifeguard, a Cypriot national

Authorities are examining possible negligence and delays in offering aid to the child, as well as potential shortcomings in lifeguard coverage or emergency coordination at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing, led by the local port authorities. Public interest remains high, and both local officials and the community are calling for full accountability.
