“Aisios Oionos 2025”: Military exercise in Meriç featuring drone and anti-drone systems

Everything is ready at the “Aetos” firing and training range near Dedeağaç for the Distinguished Visitors’ Day and the tactical field exercise “Aisios Oionos – 25”, organized and directed by the Supreme Military Command of Thrace.

The medium-scale exercise, scheduled for Friday, November 14, 2025, will simulate the invasion of enemy forces into Greek territory, their containment in a predetermined area, and a coordinated counterattack by combined arms units. The operation will involve armored vehicles, artillery, attack helicopters, and Air Force assets, aiming to restore control over national territory. The scenario also includes paratrooper drops and UAV (drone) flights.

For the first time, special emphasis will be placed on unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and counter-drone technologies, which will be extensively tested at the “Aetos” range. The presence of domestic defense technology and Greek companies underlines the Ministry of Defense and Hellenic National Defense General Staff (HNDGS) strategy to promote the national defense industry and integrate network-centric capabilities into operational doctrine.

Vehicles taking part will include Marder 1A3 infantry fighting vehicles, M1117 armored vehicles, and various artillery, tank, and mortar systems. The exercise will also feature Army Aviation aircraft, Hellenic Air Force planes, and JTAC personnel for precision fire coordination.

The operational display will showcase both well-established and newly introduced systems, such as SPIKE NLOS missiles, the “Archytas” unmanned aerial program, and Navy quadcopters. Among the anti-drone technologies to be tested are the “Kentavros” and “Hyperion” systems — reflecting Greece’s growing focus on indigenous production and operational autonomy.

Organizers stress that “Aisios Oionos – 25” goes beyond a typical training exercise, aiming to redefine Greece’s deterrence doctrine by placing technology and industrial cooperation at its core. However, minor incidents and safety challenges were reported during preparations, serving as a reminder that high-intensity exercises demand strict safety oversight and flawless coordination.
