ADEDI Meriç–İskeçe: “The Egnatia Highway is in terrible condition from Selanik to Bahçeköy”

The Meriç and Xanthi branches of ADEDY (the Greek civil servants’ federation) have jointly raised the issue of the poor condition of the Egnatia Odos highway, from Selanik to the Greek–Turkish border at Kipoi, calling for immediate repairs.

In a statement submitted to the Regional Council of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace (EMT), the unions describe the road as being in “deplorable condition,” with potholes and serious surface damage posing risks to drivers and causing vehicle damage.

They emphasize that the Egnatia Odos is a vital national highway, essential for road safety, trade, tourism, and regional economic development, and note that citizens traveling for medical reasons face particular hardship due to the lack of proper access to the University General Hospital of Dedeağaç.

“It is unacceptable for citizens to keep paying tolls for a road where their safety is not guaranteed,” the statement says.

Key Demands:

Immediate start of full maintenance works on the Thessaloniki–Kipoi section by Egnatia Odos S.A., the responsible company.

Ensuring road safety and protecting citizens’ lives and property.

Supporting local economies and tourism through proper infrastructure.

Exemption from tolls for residents of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace who use the road daily for work or medical reasons.

The unions call for the matter to be placed on the agenda of the next Regional Council meeting, urging authorities to take concrete action to compel Egnatia Odos S.A. to restore the damaged roadway.
