A scandalous incident took place on the evening of Wednesday, July 9, in Gümülcine’s central City Square, in front of the Citizen Service Center (KEP) building. A foreign national, whose identity has not been disclosed, lowered the Greek flag from its pole and set it on fire while the KEP was still operating.

Thanks to the statements and quick intervention of two eyewitnesses, the case was swiftly resolved. The suspect was apprehended and taken into custody by police officers from the Komotini Police Department.

In an official statement released by the Hellenic Police (ELAS), the following was reported:

“On Wednesday evening, July 9, 2025, in Komotini, police officers from the Komotini Police Department detained a foreign national. The suspect had lowered and burned a Greek flag located in front of a public building in the city. A preliminary investigation into the incident has been launched by the Gümülcine Crime Prevention and Investigation Division.”

After the incident, the empty flagpole where the flag once stood drew attention. Authorities have stated that the burned flag will be replaced as soon as possible.

This act has sparked outrage among locals and is expected to lead to further investigation and possible legal consequences for the perpetrator.
