8 in 10 support age limits on social media use for children, new poll finds

The survey found that 80% of respondents support restricting or outright banning access to social media platforms for children under the age of 15, reflecting growing societal concern over the impact of digital platforms on minors.

Broad Support, Lingering Doubts About Enforcement

Despite the overwhelming support for age-based restrictions, 57% of those surveyed believe that minors would still find ways to bypass any bans or limitations put in place.

The finding highlights a dual public attitude: strong backing for regulatory measures, coupled with skepticism about their practical enforceability in an increasingly digital and decentralized online environment.

High Concern, Limited Direct Experience

The poll also revealed a notable contradiction. While public concern over social media’s influence on children remains high, the majority of respondents said they had not personally witnessed incidents of youth violence or harmful behavior directly linked to internet or social media use within their family or social circle.

This suggests that societal anxiety may be driven less by direct experience and more by broader perceptions of risk, media reporting, and public debate around online safety.

Parents Call for Stronger Digital Oversight

Overall, the findings indicate that parents and the wider public increasingly favor stricter supervision of children in digital spaces, including the introduction of formal age limits for social media use.

As governments across Europe explore regulatory frameworks for online platforms, the survey underscores mounting pressure for policies aimed at protecting minors from potential online harms.
