The traditional Hıdırellez and Spring Festival in Southern Meriç attracted a large crowd on Sunday, May 3, despite cold and windy weather, reaffirming the enduring cultural vitality of the Turkish minority in Western Thrace.

Organized by the Southern Meriç Education and Cultural Association, the event took place in the Palamutluk area near Musaköy, bringing together community members, local leaders, and officials.

Among the attendees were representatives of the Consulate General of Turkey in Gümülcine, including Vice Consul Umut Yamık and Attaché Yunus Boz. Political and civil society figures also participated, such as Çiğdem Asafoğlu, Ahmet Osman Pehlivan, and Aydın Ahmet.

Cultural Heritage and Unity Emphasized
In his opening remarks, Şerafettin Hurşit underlined the importance of preserving cultural traditions, describing Hıdırellez as a deeply rooted celebration in Turkic and Central Asian heritage, dating back to pre-Islamic times.

Hıdırellez represents the union of traditions, beliefs, and seasonal renewal. It symbolizes hope, rebirth, and the continuity of cultural identity,” he noted.

Speakers throughout the event stressed the importance of passing cultural values to future generations. Association President Hüseyin Mahmut highlighted the role of such gatherings in maintaining unity and community cohesion.

“Our goal is to preserve these traditions and pass them on to younger generations. This cultural heritage is invaluable,” he said.

Similarly, FEP Party leader Çiğdem Asafoğlu reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the region, stating that protecting such longstanding traditions is a shared responsibility.

Celebrations Mark the Arrival of Spring
The festival concluded with a series of performances and activities, including traditional music by the Gümülcine Turkish Youth Union saz ensemble, folk dance shows, and certificate ceremonies for children participating in marbling (ebru) workshops.

Despite adverse weather conditions, the event served as both a vibrant cultural gathering and a symbolic celebration of spring’s arrival, reinforcing communal bonds across the region.
