The Consulate General of Greece in Istanbul organized an event on World Greek Language Day, themed "Language and the Sea: The Two Pillars of Hellenism."

The event took place on February 11 at the Galata Greek School, a recently restored building that now serves as a cultural center. Professor Maria Efthimiu from the History Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was the keynote speaker.

Among the attendees were educators and students from Zografyon Greek Minority Middle and High School, Zapyon Greek High School, and Phanar Greek High School, as well as Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew and other clergy members.

Key Highlights:

  • Greek Consul General Konstantinos Kutras welcomed participants, emphasizing the importance of Greek language education in Istanbul and Gökçeada.
  • Patriarch Bartholomew delivered a speech highlighting the cultural and historical significance of the Greek language.
  • The Galata Greek School was restored through contributions from businessman Thanasis Martinos under the patronage of Patriarch Bartholomew and now functions as a cultural hub.

The event honored teachers, professors, and educators for their contributions to Greek education, recognizing their efforts in preserving the language and heritage.
